Kodama of the West Tree card art
Kodama of the West Tree turns every modified creature into a land-fetching engine, stapling Cultivate-style ramp onto combat damage triggers at a three-mana cost that makes it trivially easy to slam on curve. It's one of the most efficient value creatures in +1/+1 counter strategies, and Reyhan, Last of the Abzan // Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful hitting 58% inclusion is the clearest proof the format agrees.

Reyhan, Last of the AbzanYoshimaru, Ever Faithful

Reyhan, Last of the Abzan // Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful

58.5% of decks · synergy 0.56

Reyhan, Last of the Abzan // Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful runs counters-matter as its entire identity, and Kodama of the West Tree converts every countered attacker into a land drop — the pair generates ramp and board pressure from the same creatures simultaneously.

02
Cleopatra, Exiled Pharaoh

Cleopatra, Exiled Pharaoh

52.6% of decks · synergy 0.50

Cleopatra, Exiled Pharaoh distributes counters broadly across the board, and Kodama of the West Tree ensures that a wide modified army is also stockpiling lands every combat, keeping the engine fueled deep into the game.

03
Toph, Earthbending Master

Toph, Earthbending Master

53.3% of decks · synergy 0.47

Toph, Earthbending Master cares about lands entering the battlefield, and Kodama of the West Tree's triggered fetches feed that payoff directly — attacking with modified creatures becomes a loop of land drops and Toph triggers in the same turn.

04
Bristly Bill, Spine Sower

Bristly Bill, Spine Sower

50.7% of decks · synergy 0.44

Bristly Bill, Spine Sower puts counters on creatures whenever lands enter, and Kodama of the West Tree closes the loop by making those newly modified creatures fetch more lands — the two cards form a self-reinforcing engine that accelerates out of control quickly.

05
Chishiro, the Shattered Blade

Chishiro, the Shattered Blade

50.1% of decks · synergy 0.42

Chishiro, the Shattered Blade generates Spirit tokens whenever auras or equipment enter, but the real glue is that every modified creature it produces becomes a trigger waiting to happen for Kodama of the West Tree, turning a token-wide board into a land-search machine.

FormatVerdict

oathbreaker

Commander is where Kodama of the West Tree does its best work, slotting into any deck that puts counters on creatures — counters, auras, equipment, and mutate shells all qualify modified creatures easily, and the land fetches from combat damage compound fast over a long multiplayer game. In competitive 60-card formats like Modern and Pioneer it has seen fringe experimentation in counters and Hardened Scales builds, but the payoff is too slow without multiple triggers per turn, and three mana is a steep ask when the rest of those strategies are trying to close games by turn four. Legacy and Vintage have access to it but have no real interest — there are faster ways to ramp and better ways to win in those formats. Oathbreaker is a reasonable home if the planeswalker is counter-synergistic, but Commander remains the overwhelming natural habitat for Kodama of the West Tree.
