Josu Vess, Lich Knight card art
Josu Vess, Lich Knight drops eight 2/2 menace Zombie tokens when you kick it for ten mana — one card that can fill a board and end a game in a single trigger. The cost is real, but black has enough ritual effects and mana doublers that hitting ten lands isn't a requirement, and Liliana, Heretical Healer can recur the whole line if it goes wrong.

Liliana, Heretical Healer

31.9% of decks · synergy 0.30

Liliana, Heretical Healer is the natural home — she flips off any nontoken creature death, and Josu Vess, Lich Knight is exactly the kind of high-ceiling reanimation target her back side wants to recur from the graveyard.

Gisa and Geralf

Gisa and Geralf

29.2% of decks · synergy 0.28

Gisa and Geralf let you cast Josu Vess, Lich Knight directly from the graveyard, meaning getting to ten mana once is often enough to threaten the line repeatedly across multiple turns.

Commander is where Josu Vess, Lich Knight actually gets to do its thing — ten mana is achievable in a format with Sol Ring, Cabal Coffers, and Crypt Ghast all legal, and flooding a board with eight menace tokens closes games that have stalled out. In Pioneer and Modern, ten mana is a fantasy in any competitive context, and a vanilla 4/4 for five is unplayable; casual or budget brews occasionally try the kick, but the card is functionally uncompetitive at those tables. Legacy and Vintage have the mana acceleration to reach ten theoretically, but the payoff isn't remotely worth a slot in those formats when the same mana wins with more efficient engines. Josu Vess, Lich Knight is a Commander card through and through.
