Jeskai Elder card art
Jeskai Elder is a one-mana 1/2 that replaces itself whenever it deals combat damage to a player and can grow itself by paying one mana when it attacks. The payoff is real but narrow — it demands evasion support to trigger consistently, and a 1/2 body in Commander dies to a stiff breeze.

In Commander, Jeskai Elder fits niche prowess or Jeskai tempo builds that care about connecting with players — think Feather, the Redeemed or Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest shells where cheap bodies with draw-on-damage clauses have actual support. In Pauper it's legal but outclassed by dedicated card-draw spells at the same cost, and the pump ability doesn't make up the gap. Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer have no competitive home for it — a fragile one-drop that needs to hit faces to draw a card simply doesn't clear the bar in those formats. Oathbreaker could find a home for Jeskai Elder in a low-curve storm-adjacent shell, but only if the commander already incentivizes small evasive creatures.
