Jade Mage card art
Jade Mage turns excess mana into a Saproling army at instant speed — two mana per token is fair, and the lack of an activation ceiling is what makes it dangerous. In any deck that generates mana faster than it can spend it, Jade Mage graduates from role-player to win condition, and alongside Pitiless Plunderer or Slimefoot, the Stowaway it becomes a full engine.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Slimefoot, the Stowaway

Slimefoot, the Stowaway

44.2% of decks · synergy 0.43

Slimefoot, the Stowaway turns every token Jade Mage makes into a damage source and a life-drain trigger, so the Mage's uncapped activation becomes a direct kill condition the moment you have enough mana.

02
Shroofus Sproutsire

Shroofus Sproutsire

22.1% of decks · synergy 0.21

Shroofus Sproutsire rewards piling up fungus and Saproling tokens, and Jade Mage supplies them on demand — the Mage feeds the go-wide count that Shroofus wants to convert into board presence and payoffs.

03
Agatha of the Vile Cauldron

Agatha of the Vile Cauldron

16.3% of decks · synergy 0.16

Agatha of the Vile Cauldron exiles creatures to add counters and copy activated abilities, which means Jade Mage's token-production ability can end up stapled to Agatha herself or any other creature she's buffed — multiplying the Mage's output without paying for a second copy.

Format Analysis

FormatVerdict
commander

modern

vintage

oathbreaker

Commander is where Jade Mage earns its keep: long games, mana doublers, and token synergy commanders create the conditions where an uncapped repeatable token-maker is genuinely threatening rather than merely fine. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but irrelevant — those formats end before the Mage's engine gets moving, and dedicated token strategies have faster, more resilient tools. Oathbreaker is the only other format worth mentioning, where the tighter game length cuts against Jade Mage the same way it does in Legacy, though a Planeswalker that accelerates mana could theoretically make it work.

Price Context

Current price

$0.21 bulk tier

At $0.21, Jade Mage is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard and shipping, not the card. That price is stable by definition; bulk commons and uncommons don't move unless a specific spike drives demand, and a niche Commander role-player is unlikely to cause one.
