Hungry Ghoul asks you to trade a mana and a card for a 1/1 that grows only when Zombies die — a payoff too slow and too conditional to matter in most games. Unless Zul Ashur, Lich Lord is your commander and you're already drowning in Zombie death triggers, this is a bench card.

Zul Ashur, Lich Lord
Zul Ashur, Lich Lord converts your Zombie deaths into card advantage, which means Hungry Ghoul is seeing counters at the same time you're drawing gas — the two engines run in parallel rather than competing for resources.

Hungry Ghoul is legal everywhere but relevant nowhere outside Commander. In Pauper or any constructed format, a two-mana 1/1 with a slow, conditional growth clause doesn't survive the density of threats competing for the same slot. In Commander, it lands in exactly one niche: Zombie tribal decks with high creature turnover, where the counter accumulation can eventually produce a meaningful beatstick. Even there, it's a fringe inclusion — most Zombie lists have tighter payoffs for the same death triggers.

Price Context
Current price
$0.08 bulk tier
At $0.08, Hungry Ghoul is deep bulk — the kind of card that fills out a trade binder and little else. Don't expect that floor to move; casual demand is thin and reprint risk from any Zombie-themed precon keeps a ceiling firmly in place.
