Hovel Hurler is a Commander card through and through — the combination of an enters-the-battlefield trigger, a death trigger, and a body that plays nicely with undying and recursion engines is exactly what 100-card singleton rewards. In competitive 60-card formats like Modern and Pioneer, five mana for a 4/4 with a delayed 3/3 is simply too slow against faster threats and counterspell-heavy opposition. Legacy and Vintage are non-starters for the same reason at ten times the cost efficiency. Hovel Hurler finds its real home in Commander pods running sacrifice loops, where every death is a free Fling.
