In Commander, Hostile Realm scales with the format's multi-player aggression in ways one-on-one formats can't match — three opponents attacking means three land taxes per combat, and political pressure shifts toward anyone who can't afford to swing. In Legacy, Modern, and Vintage, it's legal but finds no real home; dedicated control and tempo decks have more efficient tools, and the effect is too slow against combo. Pauper is where Hostile Realm has the most plausible niche outside Commander, particularly in defensive creature-light shells that want to stall the board without spending cards on blockers.
