Holistic Wisdom turns any card in your hand into a free recursion spell — exile something to return a permanent or instant or sorcery of that type from your graveyard, no mana required after the initial three. The activation cost is steep in deckbuilding terms: you need a hand deep enough to spend cards as currency, and the effect is slow at sorcery speed.

Commander is where Holistic Wisdom actually gets to breathe — long games, full graveyards, and commanders like Muldrotha, the Gravetide or Karador, Ghost Chieftain that reward graveyard redundancy make the exchange rate feel less punishing. In Legacy and Vintage it's technically legal but has never found a home; those formats move too fast for a three-mana enchantment that requires setup and pays off over multiple turns. Oathbreaker shares enough of Commander's slower, value-oriented DNA that the card is playable there, though the smaller starting hand makes the exile cost hurt more.
