Discover 10. If the discovered card's mana value is less than 10, create a number of tapped Treasure tokens equal to the difference. (To discover 10, exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a nonland card with mana value 10 or less. Cast it without paying its mana cost or put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom in a random order.)

Hit the Mother Lode card art
Hit the Mother Lode puts five Treasure tokens onto the battlefield — immediate, explosive mana that can fund the rest of your turn or a subsequent combo sequence. The five-mana cost is steep until you pair it with Mortuary or loop it under Lorehold, the Historian, at which point the math tilts hard in your favor.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Lorehold, the Historian

Lorehold, the Historian

79.7% of decks · synergy 0.77

Lorehold, the Historian's ability to cast spells from the graveyard turns Hit the Mother Lode into a repeatable Treasure engine — cast it, recur it, and drown your opponents in mana.

02
Magar of the Magic Strings

Magar of the Magic Strings

59.8% of decks · synergy 0.56

Magar of the Magic Strings can copy Hit the Mother Lode onto a creature as a meat-shield and then recast it for free, turning a single copy into multiple waves of Treasures without spending additional cards.

03

Ashling, Rekindled

46.2% of decks · synergy 0.42

Ashling, Rekindled's spell-recursion triggers reward instants and sorceries that do something impactful on their own, and Hit the Mother Lode generating five Treasures clears that bar easily while bankrolling Ashling's subsequent activations.

04
The Infamous Cruelclaw

The Infamous Cruelclaw

39.6% of decks · synergy 0.36

The Infamous Cruelclaw wants to copy and recur high-impact spells, and Hit the Mother Lode's Treasure payload scales well when duplicated — two copies means ten Treasures and a very short path to a lethal turn.

05
Neera, Wild Mage

Neera, Wild Mage

37.1% of decks · synergy 0.33

Neera, Wild Mage randomly swaps spells into other spells, and hitting Hit the Mother Lode off a cheap cantrip is exactly the kind of jackpot her decks are built around — five Treasures out of nowhere funds whatever Neera digs up next.

Format Analysis

Hit the Mother Lode is legal in every major Constructed format but lives almost exclusively in Commander, where five Treasures at sorcery speed is a legitimate mid-game accelerant rather than a tempo loss. In competitive 60-card formats — Modern, Pioneer, Legacy — five mana for a sorcery that produces no immediate board state beyond tokens is far too slow; faster ramp and combo infrastructure makes this unplayable there. Standard and Oathbreaker are technically legal homes, but the same logic applies: the payoff needs a loop or a recur engine to justify the cost, and those engines are more abundant and forgiving in Commander's 100-card singleton environment. Play it in Commander, ignore it elsewhere.

Price Context

Current price

$0.43 bulk tier

At $0.43, Hit the Mother Lode sits firmly in bulk territory — easy to acquire as an upgrade or a casual inclusion without any budget consideration. Bulk rares with narrow combo applications tend to stay cheap, so don't expect the price to move unless a breakout Commander deck pushes demand.
