Hidden Retreat card art
Hidden Retreat lets you discard a card to put a spell you cast back on top of your library — protecting it from counters, resetting a triggered condition, or buying back a key spell without spending extra mana. The cost is real: you're pitching a card every time, so it belongs in decks that want cards in the graveyard or can afford to cycle chaff. Approach of the Second Sun is the textbook use case, letting you re-cast it from your own hand after the trigger fires without losing it to interaction, and Lorehold, the Historian has made Hidden Retreat a staple precisely for that reason.

Hidden Retreat is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, and Commander is where it actually sees play. The effect is too slow and card-negative for Legacy or Vintage, where the formats move fast enough that discarding to protect a spell is almost never worth the tempo loss. In Commander, the politics are slower, interaction windows are wider, and the decks that care — primarily Lorehold, the Historian lists built around Approach of the Second Sun — can absorb the discard cost and weaponize the recursion angle at the same time. Outside of dedicated combo-protection shells, Hidden Retreat is a narrow include even in Commander, but in the right 99 it does exactly one job and does it reliably.

Price Context

Current price

$2.94 cheap tier

At $2.94, Hidden Retreat sits at the low end of the cheap tier — accessible enough that including it in a dedicated list is a trivial budget call. It's a narrow card with a real but small ceiling on demand, so don't expect the price to move meaningfully unless a marquee commander pushes the Approach of the Second Sun archetype further into the mainstream.
