Hazezon Tamar card art
Hazezon Tamar enters and schedules an army — on your next upkeep, you get a Sand Warrior token for every land you control, which in a three- or four-color goodstuff shell can easily mean eight or more 1/1s with haste. The catch is the removal target painted on him immediately and the fact that his death trigger exiles every Sand Warrior he ever made, so protecting him until upkeep is the entire game.

Commander is where Hazezon Tamar belongs — the token count scales with land-focused strategies like Landfall or Jund token shells, and his Naya color identity gives access to the best token doublers, haste enablers, and land ramp available. The delayed trigger is a liability in faster pods but trivial to protect for a single turn with a counterspell or even a well-timed Fog effect. In Legacy and Vintage, Hazezon Tamar is technically legal but practically invisible — seven mana for a delayed token payoff is a non-starter in formats where the game is often decided by turn three. Oathbreaker has the same problem at a compressed game length, making him a Commander-exclusive card in all but name.
