Gruul Guildgate card art
Gruul Guildgate enters tapped, which is the whole problem — in a format where tempo matters, paying a full turn for an untapped dual is a real cost. It's fine in Obuun, Mul Daya Ancestor builds that want land-type synergies and can stomach the slowness, but in any deck that wants to move fast, there are better options.

Commanders with the highest synergy

Obuun, Mul Daya Ancestor

Obuun, Mul Daya Ancestor

22.7% of decks · synergy 0.20

Obuun, Mul Daya Ancestor cares about lands entering the battlefield and animating them into creatures, so Gruul Guildgate's enters-tapped drawback matters less when every land drop is doing incremental work toward the combat plan.

02
Halana and Alena, Partners

Halana and Alena, Partners

14.9% of decks · synergy 0.09

Halana and Alena, Partners runs Gruul Guildgate as straightforward color fixing — the deck needs both red and green reliably, and a guaranteed dual at bulk price clears that bar even with the tempo cost.

03
Nikya of the Old Ways

Nikya of the Old Ways

10.2% of decks · synergy 0.05

Nikya of the Old Ways locks out noncreature spells, which means the mana base needs to be airtight from the start; Gruul Guildgate fills a dual-land slot when budget is a constraint and the lock means you're not casting spells on turn two anyway.

In Commander, Gruul Guildgate is a budget filler land — it does the job of producing both red and green mana, and the enters-tapped penalty is most forgivable in slower, higher-curve decks. In competitive Commander, it doesn't make the cut; fetchlands, shocklands, and even Cinder Glade do the same job without the tempo loss. In Pauper, where color fixing at common is genuinely scarce, Gruul Guildgate sees real play and the enters-tapped cost is accepted as part of the format's constraints. Across other formats — Modern, Pioneer, Legacy — it's strictly outclassed and rarely sees a maindeck.

Price Context

Current price

$0.14 bulk tier

At $0.14, Gruul Guildgate is deep bulk — it will not appreciate and there's no reason to pay more than a few cents for it. It's worth including when you need green-red fixing on a tight budget and have exhausted the better options; otherwise, spend a little more for something that enters untapped.
