Gruff Triplets enters as three separate 3/3 creatures and redistributes damage among them on death, making it a persistent, removal-resistant threat that demands multiple answers. The seven-mana cost is real, but token-doubling commanders like Ghired, Mirror of the Wilds and reanimation engines like Slimefoot and Squee turn that cost into a bargain by multiplying or recycling what you're already getting.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Ghired, Mirror of the Wilds
Ghired, Mirror of the Wilds copies Gruff Triplets on attack, immediately flooding the board with six 3/3s and making the damage-redistribution death trigger a recurring threat even through sweepers.

Adrix and Nev, Twincasters
Adrix and Nev, Twincasters doubles every token Gruff Triplets produces, turning a three-creature entry into six bodies and making each death trigger redistribute across an even larger pool of targets.

Ghired, Conclave Exile
Ghired, Conclave Exile populates Gruff Triplets tokens directly, giving the deck a reliable way to keep the board stocked with 3/3s without ever casting the seven-mana original again.

Esix, Fractal Bloom
Esix, Fractal Bloom can redirect the first token you create each turn into a copy of Gruff Triplets, letting cheaper token producers chain into a board of self-replacing 3/3s.

Volo, Guide to Monsters
Volo, Guide to Monsters copies Gruff Triplets on cast since Goats are an uncommon creature type, immediately doubling the entry to six 3/3s and making the seven-mana investment pay double dividends.
Format Analysis

Commander is where Gruff Triplets actually belongs — the seven-mana cost is acceptable in a 40-life format where token synergies, populate, and reanimation are abundant. In Modern and Pioneer, it's simply too slow and too easily answered at sorcery speed to compete. Legacy and Vintage are non-starters for the same reason, plus the existence of faster, more broken threats at every point on the curve. Standard is the only other format where it sees occasional fringe play, but even there it sits at the top of the curve and asks a lot of a format with faster clocks. Play Gruff Triplets in Commander and only Commander.

$0.74 bulk tier
At $0.74, Gruff Triplets sits firmly in bulk territory, which is accurate — it's a powerful effect in the right shell but not a staple that commands a premium. It holds that price floor as long as token and populate strategies stay popular in Commander, but don't expect movement in either direction.
