Growth Spiral card art
Growth Spiral puts a land into play untapped and replaces itself — all at instant speed for two mana. It's the cleanest early-game ramp spell in Simic, and any deck with access to green and blue that wants lands in play before turn four should be running it.

01
Nine-Fingers Keene

Nine-Fingers Keene

70.9% of decks · synergy 0.54

Nine-Fingers Keene cares about lands entering the battlefield to fuel cipher triggers and storm-style recursion, making Growth Spiral a two-mana accelerant that simultaneously advances the land count and cycles into the next piece of the engine.

02
Kalamax, the Stormsire

Kalamax, the Stormsire

74.2% of decks · synergy 0.49

Kalamax, the Stormsire copies the first instant you cast each turn, so Growth Spiral at instant speed can become two lands entering and two cards drawn — a massive tempo swing that also grows Kalamax's power.

03
Storm, Force of Nature

Storm, Force of Nature

59.3% of decks · synergy 0.34

Growth Spiral is an instant, which matters enormously for Storm, Force of Nature's spell-count triggers; it advances the land base while padding the storm count without eating your sorcery-speed slot.

04
Archelos, Lagoon Mystic

Archelos, Lagoon Mystic

49.4% of decks · synergy 0.33

Archelos, Lagoon Mystic cares specifically about lands entering tapped versus untapped, and Growth Spiral's put-into-play-untapped clause lets you weaponize that distinction on your own terms — including at instant speed during an opponent's turn.

05
Omnath, Locus of the Roil

Omnath, Locus of the Roil

55.8% of decks · synergy 0.31

Every land drop triggers Omnath, Locus of the Roil, so Growth Spiral's free land entry is a damage ping or a card draw depending on your creature count, making it a spell that does double duty beyond simple ramp.

In Commander, Growth Spiral is a staple — instant-speed ramp that replaces itself fits nearly every Simic shell, from landfall builds to control to combo, and the two-mana cost means it doesn't slow down your early curve. In Pauper it sees play in Simic tempo and ramp lists for exactly the same reason: card-neutral ramp at instant speed is hard to find at common. Modern and Pioneer shells have used Growth Spiral in ramp strategies, particularly alongside Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath and similar payoffs, though its role there is more situational as those formats have moved on. Legacy and Vintage have access to more broken acceleration, so Growth Spiral is mostly outclassed in those formats. Standard legality has lapsed, but the card defined its time in that format — it was part of several ban-adjacent conversations during its run.
