Green Ward slaps protection from green onto a creature for one white mana and replaces itself when it resolves — that's a real effect at a real rate. It's a narrow aura that earns a slot only when green threats are prevalent enough to justify the conditional protection.

Green Ward is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but sees virtually no competitive play in any of them. In Commander, it's too situational — protection from green does real work in pods heavy on Elfball or Gaea's Cradle strategies, but it's dead cardboard against half the table otherwise. Legacy and Vintage have access to better protection effects and don't want auras that only answer one color. Green Ward is a fringe consideration at best, and only in Commander metas where green is overwhelmingly dominant.
