Greatsword gives any creature +2/+0 and trample for three mana to equip — a meaningful clock upgrade on any commander that wants to push through blockers. The three-mana equip cost is the ceiling, not the floor; on creatures that untap and reattach for free or reduce equip costs, Greatsword overperforms its $0.12 price tag by a wide margin.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Greatsword earns a slot almost exclusively in equipment-matters decks helmed by commanders like Wyleth, Soul of Steel or Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist, where the equip cost gets reduced or the draw engine makes the overhead irrelevant. In Legacy, Modern, and Vintage, Greatsword is outclassed by equipment that costs less to cast, less to equip, or does both — Colossus Hammer and Sword of Fire and Ice exist at the same price point on curve, so Greatsword never sees competitive play there. Outside of dedicated equipment shells, the card is too slow and too narrow to justify a slot in any format where it's legal.

Price Context
Current price
$0.12 bulk tier
At $0.12, Greatsword is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard and nothing else. It won't appreciate; equipment at this power level has no speculative floor, and there are no shortage-driven reprints to watch.
