Grand Melee forces every creature on the battlefield to attack each combat if able, turning any board state into a chaos engine that punishes passive, defensive play. Four mana for a global enchantment that reshapes threat assessment at every table is a real rate — the cost is that you lose defensive blockers too, so you need a plan to survive the chaos you're creating.

Grand Melee is a Commander card through and through — the four-player free-for-all is exactly the environment where forcing 30+ creatures to attack simultaneously creates the most disruption and political leverage. It's legal in Legacy and Vintage but sees essentially no play there; those formats reward tight, linear game plans and Grand Melee's effect is too symmetrical and too slow to matter in 1v1. In Oathbreaker the smaller card pool and faster games mean it can occasionally find a home in go-wide builds, but Commander is where it has real teeth, especially in token-stax or pillow-fort shells that can exploit the enforced attacks while insulating themselves from the blowback.

Price Context
Current price
$1.45 cheap tier
At $1.45, Grand Melee sits firmly in the bulk-rare tier — cheap enough to slot in on a whim and unlikely to drop further given its unique effect and steady Commander demand. It's not a card that appreciates, but at this price you're not taking a risk picking one up.
