Goro-Goro, Disciple of Ryusei card art
Goro-Goro, Disciple of Ryusei turns any attacking token producer into a Dragon factory — pay two mana after combat and suddenly every hasted creature that swung represents a 5/5 flier. The cost is real: five mana to activate per Dragon is slow without acceleration like Mana Echoes, and the payoff vanishes if your board gets wiped before the trigger resolves. Pair him with Raiyuu, Storm's Edge for repeated combat steps and the engine becomes genuinely threatening.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Raiyuu, Storm's Edge

Raiyuu, Storm's Edge

49.3% of decks · synergy 0.48

Raiyuu, Storm's Edge grants additional combat steps whenever a lone Samurai or Warrior attacks, and Goro-Goro, Disciple of Ryusei converts each of those extra combats into a Dragon — the two cards are essentially co-designed to loop together.

02
Redshift, Rocketeer Chief

Redshift, Rocketeer Chief

33.9% of decks · synergy 0.32

Redshift, Rocketeer Chief cares about modified and attacking creatures, so the Dragons that Goro-Goro, Disciple of Ryusei generates slot naturally into the go-wide, haste-heavy gameplan Redshift rewards.

03
Gilgamesh, Master-at-Arms

Gilgamesh, Master-at-Arms

35.9% of decks · synergy 0.30

Gilgamesh, Master-at-Arms triggers off attacking creatures and scales with wide boards, making the stream of hasty 5/5s that Goro-Goro, Disciple of Ryusei produces both fuel and payoff in the same package.

04
Goro-Goro and Satoru

Goro-Goro and Satoru

28.6% of decks · synergy 0.28

Goro-Goro and Satoru already incentivizes ninjutsu and evasive attackers, and Goro-Goro, Disciple of Ryusei adds a Dragon-creation layer that gives the deck a secondary threat axis when the ninjutsu plan stalls.

05
Muxus, Goblin Grandee

Muxus, Goblin Grandee

32.4% of decks · synergy 0.27

Muxus, Goblin Grandee floods the board with Goblins in one swing, and Goro-Goro, Disciple of Ryusei turns that alpha strike into a Dragon army on top — the activation cost is trivial when Mana Echoes is already generating absurd amounts of mana off the Goblin pile.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

FormatVerdict
commander
legacy
modern
pioneer
standard
vintage
pauper
oathbreaker

Commander is where Goro-Goro, Disciple of Ryusei actually lives — the repeated combat and token synergies that define multiplayer EDH give the activation room to breathe, and the Dragon tokens are large enough to matter against three opponents. In competitive constructed formats like Modern and Pioneer he has seen essentially no play, because a two-mana 2/2 that requires additional investment to do anything is far too slow against interactive decks that can answer him before the first Dragon appears. Legacy and Vintage are legal on paper but irrelevant in practice. Oathbreaker is the one fringe format where he could plausibly slot in as a signature-spell enabler, but the Dragon payoff needs a critical mass of attacking creatures that Oathbreaker's smaller decks rarely supply.

Price Context

Current price

$1.37 cheap tier

At $1.37, Goro-Goro, Disciple of Ryusei sits in the bulk-rare tier — cheap enough to slot into any Goblin or Dragon-adjacent deck without a second thought. Demand is steady rather than spiking, so the price is unlikely to move much unless a high-profile commander release pushes attacking-token strategies back into the spotlight.
