Golgari Germination card art
Golgari Germination turns every non-token creature death into a 1/1 Saproling, which means your board refills automatically every time removal or a board wipe hits. The two-mana enchantment asking essentially nothing to keep online makes it a staple in any deck that wants to flood the board — and Slimefoot and Squee, which kills and recurs creatures by design, treats Golgari Germination as a core engine piece rather than a nice-to-have.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Slimefoot and Squee

Slimefoot and Squee

58.0% of decks · synergy 0.56

Slimefoot and Squee mills and recurs creatures in a loop, and Golgari Germination converts every one of those deaths into a fresh Saproling — the two cards form a self-sustaining token engine that barely needs additional support.

02
Slimefoot, the Stowaway

Slimefoot, the Stowaway

40.3% of decks · synergy 0.38

Slimefoot, the Stowaway pings opponents and drains life whenever a Saproling dies, so Golgari Germination's steady stream of replacement tokens directly translates into repeated drain triggers.

03
Savra, Queen of the Golgari

Savra, Queen of the Golgari

24.3% of decks · synergy 0.22

Savra, Queen of the Golgari demands a constant supply of black and green creatures to sacrifice for her drain and wrath effects, and Golgari Germination keeps that supply replenishing without requiring additional card investment.

04
The Mycotyrant

The Mycotyrant

14.1% of decks · synergy 0.12

The Mycotyrant scales on the number of fungi and Saprolings that have died each turn, so Golgari Germination stacking creature deaths with token production accelerates exactly the counter growth The Mycotyrant is built around.

Golgari Germination is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but its real home is Commander — a 100-card singleton format full of creature-heavy strategies where one enchantment generating tokens off every non-token death compounds quickly across a long game. In Legacy and Vintage it's theoretically castable but far too slow for formats that end games in the first few turns; no competitive shell wants a two-mana do-nothing-until-someone-dies enchantment when the game is over by turn two. Modern is technically legal but the same problem applies — Golgari Germination needs a critical mass of creature deaths over multiple turns, and Modern's pace punishes that setup cost. Oathbreaker is the one non-Commander format where it has genuine play, since the 60-card singleton environment mirrors Commander's mid-range pacing closely enough for the enchantment to pay off.

Price Context

Current price

$0.85 bulk tier

At $0.85, Golgari Germination sits firmly in bulk territory — it's cheap enough to include without a second thought in any Golgari or Jund token build. Demand is steady but not spiking; the price is anchored by consistent Commander play rather than any scarcity, so expect it to stay in this range.
