Golden Argosy turns your creatures' enters-the-battlefield triggers into a repeatable resource by phasing them out at end of turn and returning them untapped — the cost is that it demands a critical mass of ETB payoffs to justify the slot. In Vannifar, Evolved Enigma builds it's a near-auto-include; outside dedicated ETB or flicker strategies, it's a slow do-nothing.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Vannifar, Evolved Enigma
Vannifar, Evolved Enigma's ability to morph creatures between combat steps creates a loop where Golden Argosy phases those creatures out, blanking any end-of-turn downsides and letting them re-enter ready to trigger again — it's one of the tightest synergy pairs in the format.

Preston, the Vanisher
Golden Argosy phases out nontoken creatures, and Preston, the Vanisher creates Illusion tokens whenever a nontoken creature leaves the battlefield — so every end step the Argosy fires, Preston prints more tokens.

Deadpool, Trading Card
Deadpool, Trading Card wants to leave and re-enter the battlefield as often as possible to generate card draw and deal damage; Golden Argosy gives him a reliable, repeatable phase-out loop that doesn't require paying his commander tax.

Kardur, Doomscourge
Kardur, Doomscourge's attack-redirection trigger only fires when he enters the battlefield, and Golden Argosy phases him out each turn so he re-enters ready to goad an entirely new wave of creatures at your opponents.

Círdan the Shipwright
Círdan the Shipwright cares about Vehicles and crewing mechanics thematically, and Golden Argosy slots naturally into that shell — it also protects key crew members by phasing them out before opponents can pick them off at end of turn.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Golden Argosy is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but competitive Modern and Pioneer have shown little interest — the ETB-flicker payoff takes too long to assemble against faster strategies. Legacy and Vintage have access to more broken engines and simply don't need a four-mana Vehicle to generate value. Commander is the format where Golden Argosy actually earns its spot, because the slower pace, singleton construction, and prevalence of ETB-heavy creature strategies give it room to generate real advantage over multiple turns.

Pricing data for Golden Argosy isn't currently available in our system, so check Scryfall or TCGPlayer for the most accurate current number. Given its narrow Commander application and lack of competitive presence elsewhere, it has historically been an affordable pickup rather than a sought-after staple.
