Preston, the Vanisher turns every non-token creature leaving the battlefield into a free 1/1 Illusion — blink a Felidar Guardian once and you're already generating value without spending extra mana. The ceiling on Aang, at the Crossroads loops means Preston isn't just an engine piece; it's the engine.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy
Aang, at the Crossroads
Aang, at the Crossroads runs flicker loops as its primary win condition, and Preston, the Vanisher doubles the token output of every blink trigger — each creature that phases or bounces leaves behind a body even before it returns.

Plagon, Lord of the Beach
Plagon, Lord of the Beach cares about having bodies in play and taxing opponents, and Preston, the Vanisher guarantees that every creature swap or sacrifice leaves a replacement Illusion behind to keep pressure on.

Phelia, Exuberant Shepherd
Phelia, Exuberant Shepherd flickers creatures at end of combat, and Preston, the Vanisher converts each of those flickers into a free 1/1, turning incidental card selection into a growing board.

Emiel the Blessed
Emiel the Blessed blinks creatures repeatedly for three mana, and Preston, the Vanisher means each activation nets a token alongside whatever enter-the-battlefield trigger fires — raw resource generation on top of resource generation.

Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines
Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines doubles every enter-the-battlefield trigger, and Preston, the Vanisher's Illusions entering the battlefield become their own trigger fodder, compounding the value loop until the board is unmanageable.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Preston, the Vanisher lives — 100-card singleton is full of blink, flicker, and sacrifice synergies that let the token-generation clause fire repeatedly in a single turn cycle. In Legacy and Vintage, it's legal but competes with faster, more broken things and doesn't fit any established archetype. Oathbreaker gives it a second stage if your signature spell supports a flicker strategy, though the pool of enablers is narrower. Everywhere else, Preston, the Vanisher simply isn't legal.

Cheaper options that do most of the same work
Mondrak, Glory Dominus and Anointed Procession do most of the token-doubling work Preston, the Vanisher does, though they require you to already have a sacrifice or blink outlet rather than generating tokens on departure themselves. For pure enter-the-battlefield redundancy on a tighter budget, Panharmonicon covers the trigger-doubling angle at a fraction of the price, but it won't replace the free bodies Preston puts into play every time a creature leaves.
Price Context
Current price
$40.16 premium tier
At $40.16, Preston, the Vanisher sits firmly in premium territory — this is the price of a card that slots into multiple high-demand archetypes and doesn't have a cheaper functional reprint. It holds that price because the effect is genuinely unique and demand across Aang, Phelia, and Emiel builds keeps the floor elevated.
