Gerrard's Battle Cry pumps every attacking creature you control by +1/+1 for each time you've paid its cumulative upkeep — a snowballing anthem that can turn a wide board into an overwhelming alpha strike. The catch is that cumulative upkeep ages the card out fast if you can't close quickly or protect it.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Gerrard's Battle Cry has its best shot: games run long enough to stack a few upkeep counters, token and go-wide strategies are abundant, and the lack of a hard removal magnet on the card itself means it often survives a turn cycle. Legacy and Vintage are legal on paper, but the cumulative upkeep mechanic is simply too slow and resource-intensive for formats where games end by turn three or four. Oathbreaker sits closer to Commander in pace, so a tokens-focused build there can extract real value from it.
