Gaze of the Gorgon turns any blocking creature with deathtouch into a board wipe on defense — every attacker that gets blocked dies, no further investment required. Four mana at instant speed is the real cost, and outside of a deathtouch shell that cost is rarely worth paying.

In Commander, Gaze of the Gorgon earns its slot only in dedicated deathtouch builds — commanders like Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons or Atraxa, Praetors' Voice where deathtouch is a board-wide trait rather than a singleton. In Legacy and Vintage, four mana for a combat trick is non-competitive and you'll never see it. Pauper is the one format where the card has marginal relevance given the slower pace and the availability of deathtouch commons, but even there better options exist at the same mana cost. Gaze of the Gorgon is, in practice, a Commander-only card, and a conditional one at that.
