Gavony Township card art
Gavony Township turns any creature-heavy board into a permanent, compounding threat — every activation is a +1/+1 counter on everything you control, and those counters don't go away when the Township does. The cost is real: four mana and a tapped land is a steep ask each turn, but Bright-Palm, Soul Awakener decks treat that as a feature, not a bug, since each activation triggers radiance and cascades into even more counters.

Commanders with the highest synergy

Bright-Palm, Soul Awakener

Bright-Palm, Soul Awakener

61.6% of decks · synergy 0.54

Bright-Palm, Soul Awakener triggers radiance whenever a creature gets one or more +1/+1 counters, so a single Gavony Township activation at end of opponents' turns snowballs the entire board simultaneously.

02
Shalai and Hallar

Shalai and Hallar

57.3% of decks · synergy 0.49

Shalai and Hallar deals damage equal to the number of +1/+1 counters placed each turn, so Gavony Township's end-step activation converts mana directly into a repeatable damage spell that scales with board size.

03
Tayam, Luminous Enigma

Tayam, Luminous Enigma

53.8% of decks · synergy 0.46

Tayam, Luminous Enigma pays its reanimation cost by removing counters from your creatures, and Gavony Township is one of the cleanest ways to keep refilling that fuel without spending card slots on spells.

04
Falco Spara, Pactweaver

Falco Spara, Pactweaver

37.6% of decks · synergy 0.30

Falco Spara, Pactweaver lets you cast spells off the top of your library by removing counters from creatures, and Gavony Township steadily replenishes those counters so the engine never runs dry.

05
Lae'zel, Vlaakith's ChampionMaster Chef

Lae'zel, Vlaakith's Champion // Master Chef

50.2% of decks · synergy 0.25

Lae'zel, Vlaakith's Champion // Master Chef doubles every +1/+1 counter placed on your creatures, which means a single Gavony Township activation across five creatures becomes ten counters instead of five — the math gets absurd fast.

Format Analysis

Commander is where Gavony Township earns its slot without question — the longer games and larger boards mean the cumulative value of repeated activations is enormous, and it asks nothing of your deck beyond a white-green color identity. In Legacy and Vintage, it's legal but too slow; those formats punish tapping four mana for a non-immediate effect, and creature strategies there win before the Township pays off. Modern is the most interesting fringe case: aggressive counter-based decks like Hardened Scales have occasionally tested it, but the opportunity cost of a colorless land that enters tapped is prohibitive in a format that counts every tempo beat. Oathbreaker gets reasonable mileage from it in the same shells that want it in Commander.

Budget Alternatives

Cheaper options that do most of the same work

Semester's End and Conclave Mentor don't replicate the repeatable land-based activation, but if the goal is simply putting counters on the whole board, Tribute to the World Tree and Collective Effort hit multiple creatures at a fraction of the mana investment. The real trade-off is that nothing truly replicates what makes Gavony Township irreplaceable: it sits in your land slot, dodges most interaction, and scales indefinitely, which non-land alternatives simply cannot claim.

Price Context

Current price

$5.36 mid tier

At $5.36, Gavony Township sits in the mid tier — expensive enough to feel like a deliberate include, cheap enough that it's not a budget obstacle for most players. It's a heavily reprinted card with a flat price history, so you're buying it for the effect, not chasing value.
