Furnace Reins card art
Furnace Reins steals a creature until end of turn and gives it haste — so whatever you take swings immediately. The three-mana cost is fair for a one-shot effect, and in Brion Stoutarm decks, the stolen creature doesn't go back at all.

Brion Stoutarm

Brion Stoutarm

Zidane, Tantalus Thief

03
Herigast, Erupting Nullkite

Herigast, Erupting Nullkite

20.4% of decks · synergy 0.19

Herigast, Erupting Nullkite cares about casting spells with high mana values, and Furnace Reins fills the role of interaction while also producing an attacking body on the same turn.

04
Edea, Possessed Sorceress

Edea, Possessed Sorceress

16.5% of decks · synergy 0.16

Edea, Possessed Sorceress benefits from controlling creatures temporarily, and Furnace Reins slots in as a combat trick that doubles as removal when paired with sacrifice outlets already in those builds.

Format Analysis

Furnace Reins is a Commander card through and through — the format's longer games, powerful creatures, and abundance of sacrifice outlets make temporary theft far more lethal than it looks on paper. In Modern and Pioneer it's too slow and too narrow, outclassed by cheaper interactive spells that don't require a setup piece to convert into permanent value. Legacy and Vintage have the raw power density to make three mana feel expensive for a conditional effect. Stick to Commander, where the right commander turns it from a temporary steal into a one-way removal spell.

Price Context

Current price

$0.28 bulk tier

At $0.28, Furnace Reins is firmly bulk — a negligible inclusion cost for any deck that wants it. Bulk rares with narrow synergy homes tend to stay cheap, so there's no urgency beyond just picking one up when you're placing an order.
