Fulminator Mage kills a nonbasic land the moment it enters — no activation, no waiting — and the sacrifice clause means you're never trading a creature for nothing when opponents point removal at it. Three mana for guaranteed land destruction on a recurable body is the whole deal, and it's a good one.

In Commander, Fulminator Mage punishes greedy three- and four-color manabases and gets even better in decks that can recur it from the graveyard — Karador, Ghost Chieftain or Meren of Clan Nel Toth loops make it a repeatable nonbasic eraser. In Modern, it's a sideboard piece in Jund and similar midrange shells that can recur it with Kolaghan's Command, threatening to lock opponents off a key land over multiple turns. Legacy has enough basic-heavy decks and faster threats that Fulminator Mage rarely earns a slot, though it sees fringe sideboard play against Lands. It's not legal in Pioneer or Standard, and Vintage doesn't care about land destruction at this pace.

Price Context
Current price
$2.36 cheap tier
At $2.36, Fulminator Mage sits in the cheap tier — low enough that there's no real budget obstacle to running it. The price is stable; it sees consistent demand in Modern sideboards and Commander reanimator lists, so don't expect it to drop further.
