Foundation Breaker destroys an artifact or enchantment the turn it enters — no setup required — and the evoke cost means you can cash that effect in for a single green mana if you don't need the body. Commanders like Ashling, the Limitless that want creatures entering and leaving the battlefield repeatedly make Foundation Breaker more than a one-shot removal spell.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Ashling, the Limitless
Ashling, the Limitless copies triggered abilities, and Foundation Breaker entering or dying is a trigger-rich event in that shell — 76% of Ashling decks run it for exactly that reason.

Brenard, Ginger Sculptor
Brenard, Ginger Sculptor turns any creature that dies into a Food token copy, so evoking Foundation Breaker is a clean way to get the removal effect and immediately hand Brenard a body worth preserving.

Omnath, Locus of the Roil
Foundation Breaker is an Elemental, which means Omnath, Locus of the Roil pings something when it enters — free damage stapled to the removal that makes it worth a slot over a plain enchantment removal spell.

Helga, Skittish Seer
Helga, Skittish Seer cares about creatures with odd mana values, and Foundation Breaker's printed cost of five qualifies — it's removal that doubles as a Helga trigger without any extra work.

Yedora, Grave Gardener
When Foundation Breaker dies under Yedora, Grave Gardener, it comes back as a Forest — which you can then sacrifice or recur to restart the loop, turning a one-time removal spell into a repeatable resource.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Foundation Breaker earns its keep — artifact and enchantment threats are everywhere, the evoke clause makes it a functional instant at one mana when the body is irrelevant, and creature-centric engines get extra mileage from the enter-the-battlefield trigger. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but effectively invisible; Force of Vigor and Boseiju, Who Endures do the job faster and at lower opportunity cost. Modern is the one non-rotating format where Foundation Breaker could theoretically see fringe play in creature-heavy sideboards that want the body, but it hasn't made a dent. Pioneer and Standard can't run it, and Pauper cuts it off by rarity.

$0.32 bulk tier
At $0.32, Foundation Breaker is firmly bulk — you pick up a playset without noticing the expense. Bulk commons and uncommons with genuine utility tend to stay in this range indefinitely, so there's no urgency either way.
