Foster turns every creature you sacrifice into a card — a clean one-for-one replacement that keeps your hand from emptying out in sacrifice-heavy strategies. Four mana is a real cost for an enchantment that doesn't immediately replace itself, so Foster earns its slot only when you're sacrificing consistently and often.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Foster actually sees play — sacrifice synergy decks run deep in the format, and a persistent enchantment that draws on each sacrifice scales with the density of sac outlets and fodder those decks already run. In Legacy and Vintage, Foster is legal but completely absent: four mana for a draw-on-sacrifice enchantment is far too slow when those formats close games before the engine comes online. Oathbreaker shares enough of Commander's go-wide creature-sacrifice DNA that Foster could theoretically slot in, but the smaller starting hand size and faster clock make the four-mana setup cost harder to justify.

Price Context
Current price
$0.60 bulk tier
At $0.60, Foster sits firmly in bulk territory — it's an easy pickup that won't strain any budget. Demand is narrow enough that the price is unlikely to climb without a reprint or sudden spike in sacrifice-theme popularity, so buy it when you need it rather than stocking up.
