Forgotten Cave card art
Forgotten Cave enters tapped, which is a real cost, but it replaces itself on demand — cycle it for one mana whenever a land in hand is worse than a card. Commanders like Borborygmos Enraged and Gavi, Nest Warden treat that cycling trigger as a feature, not a consolation prize.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Gavi, Nest Warden

Gavi, Nest Warden

89.8% of decks · synergy 0.87

Gavi, Nest Warden lets you cycle Forgotten Cave for free once per turn, turning what is normally a one-mana cantrip land into a zero-cost trigger that generates a 2/2 Dinosaur Cat token. At nearly 90% inclusion, it's effectively a staple in every Gavi list.

03
Captain Howler, Sea Scourge

Captain Howler, Sea Scourge

58.4% of decks · synergy 0.52

Captain Howler, Sea Scourge cares about cycling and discarding, so Forgotten Cave doubles as both a land and a reliable trigger source. It shows up in more than half of all Captain Howler lists as cheap, repeatable fuel.

04
Anje Falkenrath

Anje Falkenrath

42.5% of decks · synergy 0.37

Anje Falkenrath untaps whenever you cycle or discard a madness card, and Forgotten Cave is one of the cleanest ways to fire that trigger without spending a card from hand. It appears in 42% of Anje decks as low-friction activation.

05
Rielle, the Everwise

Rielle, the Everwise

43.6% of decks · synergy 0.37

Rielle, the Everwise draws a card for each discard, so cycling Forgotten Cave nets a full card rather than just swapping a land — the tapped-land cost essentially vanishes. It's in 44% of Rielle lists as one of the most efficient cantrip lands available.

Commander is where Forgotten Cave does its best work — the singleton rule means cycling lands are directly competing with 37 other land slots, and a land that replaces itself under the right commander is worth the enters-tapped tax. In Pauper, it sees genuine play as a budget cantrip land in cycling-synergy shells, where the one-mana cycle cost is low enough to run alongside Ash Barrens and similar cards. Legacy and Vintage allow it but have no meaningful reason to run it — those formats demand untapped lands and don't play commanders. Forgotten Cave is not legal in Pioneer or Standard, so those are non-questions.
