Font of Agonies card art
Font of Agonies turns life payment into a repeatable removal engine — four blood counters means destroy any creature, and in a format full of fetchlands, Phyrexian mana, and life-paying commanders, those counters stack fast. Licia, Sanguine Tribune decks run it as a matter of course; anywhere you're already bleeding for value, Font of Agonies converts that cost into targeted removal at near-zero additional investment.

Licia, Sanguine Tribune

Licia, Sanguine Tribune

51.1% of decks · synergy 0.51

Licia, Sanguine Tribune pays life constantly to reduce her own cost and attacks into a life-gain engine, making Font of Agonies a natural fit that charges itself just by playing the deck's game plan.

02
K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth

K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth

40.3% of decks · synergy 0.36

K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth substitutes life for black mana on virtually every spell, generating blood counters on Font of Agonies at a pace no other commander can match — a single active K'rrik turn can arm the Font for multiple kills.

Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor

Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor incentivizes combat damage and opponent life loss, and the incidental life payment from Gix's own activated ability feeds Font of Agonies steadily throughout the game.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

FormatVerdict
commander
legacy
modern
pioneer
standard
vintage
pauper
oathbreaker

Font of Agonies is a Commander card in practice — the format's longer games, life-paying commanders, and fetchland-heavy mana bases all conspire to fill it with blood counters faster than any 60-card format can manage. In Modern and Pioneer, the one-mana setup cost and the four-counter threshold are simply too slow against proactive threats; better targeted removal exists at the same price point. Legacy and Vintage offer the life-payment density to charge it quickly, but those formats have access to far more efficient removal and Font of Agonies will rarely make the cut. Oathbreaker is the one non-Commander 100-card format where a life-paying signature spell could make this playable, but the card lives and dies in Commander.
