Firestorm Phoenix card art
Firestorm Phoenix is a recursive threat that keeps coming back from the graveyard — unless your opponent pays the mana tax to keep it dead. The combo ceiling with Phyrexian Altar turns that recursion into a repeatable engine, which is the real reason to run it.

Commander is where Firestorm Phoenix actually earns its slot, specifically in sacrifice and recursion shells that want a creature repeatedly cycling through the graveyard. Legacy and Vintage have it legal, but the rate is too slow for those formats — a five-mana 3/2 with conditional recursion doesn't compete at that level. Oathbreaker follows the same logic as Commander: fine in the right shell, irrelevant outside it.
