Firespout clears the board of small creatures for three mana, and in green-red shells it hits fliers too — that flexibility is the whole reason to run it. Conditional board wipes at this price point are rare, and Firespout earns its slot.

In Commander, Firespout is a budget-friendly answer to token swarms and weenie strategies, and the hybrid cost makes it accessible in any deck touching red or green. Modern and Legacy both have faster, more reliable options — Pyroclasm and Fury do similar work more efficiently — so Firespout sees minimal competitive play there. It remains legal in Vintage and Oathbreaker but faces the same problem: the formats either move too fast or offer better sweepers at comparable cost.
