Field of Souls turns every non-token creature death into a 1/1 flying Spirit, which means a single board wipe can rebuild your air force on the spot. The four-mana enchantment is slow to land but basically free to maintain, and in token-heavy white shells — especially Millicent, Restless Revenant, where every Spirit pumps the commander — the payoff dwarfs the setup cost. Nether Traitor loops alone make it a combo enabler; the floor is still a passive token generator that scales with any sacrifice or attrition strategy.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Millicent, Restless Revenant
Millicent, Restless Revenant is in over half of all Millicent decks because Field of Souls directly feeds her buff condition — every non-token creature that dies produces a Spirit, each of which stacks another +1/+1 on Millicent. The enchantment essentially converts your removal targets and sac fodder into commander damage.

Teysa Karlov
Teysa Karlov appears in roughly 13% of Teysa Karlov lists, where Field of Souls pairs with her death-trigger doubling — a single non-token creature dying creates two Spirits instead of one, turning any sacrifice outlet into a rapid token flood.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Field of Souls sees nearly all of its play in Commander, where multiplayer board wipes and aristocrats loops give it constant fuel and the four-mana cost is easy to absorb in a 40-life format. It's legal in Legacy and Vintage but rarely sees play there — four mana is a steep ask in formats where games end on turn two or three, and white token strategies have faster options. Oathbreaker is a reasonable home given the compressed game length still allows enchantments to stick, but the card's power ceiling is firmly in Commander, where death triggers fire every round and the Spirit tokens compound over a long game.

Current price
$0.18 bulk tier
At $0.18, Field of Souls is deep bulk — you should be picking copies out of dollar bins, not paying shipping for singles. The price is stable because supply is wide and the effect, while strong, doesn't have the crossover Modern or Pioneer demand that pushes enchantments above a few dollars.
