Farmer Cotton card art
Farmer Cotton lands and immediately starts converting food tokens into a Hobbit army — every food that enters while he's in play becomes a 1/1 creature, turning a resource you'd normally eat into a board. Samwise Gamgee is his natural home, generating food constantly so that Farmer Cotton's trigger fires on nearly every spell, but any food-heavy shell that wants to go wide will run him.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Samwise Gamgee

Samwise Gamgee

75.2% of decks · synergy 0.72

Samwise Gamgee triggers on every nontoken historic spell, which means a single active turn can flood the board with food tokens — and Farmer Cotton converts each of those tokens into an additional creature the moment it arrives, making the engine recursive and explosive.

02
Frodo, Adventurous HobbitSam, Loyal Attendant

Frodo, Adventurous Hobbit // Sam, Loyal Attendant

81.8% of decks · synergy 0.71

Frodo, Adventurous Hobbit // Sam, Loyal Attendant generates food as a core part of its gameplan, and Farmer Cotton turns every one of those incidental tokens into a body, accelerating the wide-board pressure the deck is already trying to assemble.

03
Merry, Warden of IsengardPippin, Warden of Isengard

Merry, Warden of Isengard // Pippin, Warden of Isengard

80.7% of decks · synergy 0.70

Merry, Warden of Isengard // Pippin, Warden of Isengard rewards stacking Hobbits and food tokens, and Farmer Cotton slots in as a force multiplier — each food that enters doubles as a creature, so the deck's token count and Hobbit synergies compound on each other.

04
Treebeard, Gracious Host

Treebeard, Gracious Host

50.4% of decks · synergy 0.47

Treebeard, Gracious Host cares about creature count and +1/+1 counters, and Farmer Cotton's steady stream of 1/1 Hobbits off food entries gives the deck more bodies to grow and more triggers to leverage on each combat step.

05
Jinnie Fay, Jetmir's Second

Jinnie Fay, Jetmir's Second

44.4% of decks · synergy 0.40

Jinnie Fay, Jetmir's Second can redirect token creation into cats or dogs, but Farmer Cotton adds a separate layer — food that enters before Jinnie Fay's replacement effect applies still creates a Hobbit, and in builds that generate food at scale, that second token stream adds meaningful redundancy.

Format Analysis

FormatVerdict

oathbreaker

Commander is where Farmer Cotton lives — the food-and-Hobbit synergy package from the Lord of the Rings set has a dedicated fanbase, and he slots into those decks as a core piece rather than a fringe inclusion. Legacy and Vintage see him as legally playable, but food-token strategies have no competitive foothold in either format, so he stays on the shelf there. Modern, Pioneer, Standard, and Pauper are all off the table. For Oathbreaker, any Samwise-adjacent signature spell strategy can use him the same way Commander lists do, though the smaller deck size makes him slightly more reliable to find.

Price Context

Current price

$3.04 cheap tier

At $3.04, Farmer Cotton sits at the top of the cheap tier — meaningful enough that he'll show up on budgets as a real line item, but accessible enough that cutting him for price reasons is hard to justify in any deck that wants him. Given that his play rate is concentrated almost entirely in a narrow tribal niche, the price is fair and unlikely to move much in either direction without a reprint or a new food-matters commander pushing demand.
