In Commander, Explosive Getaway earns its slot by doing two things simultaneously: it protects a commander or combo piece from targeted removal, and it replaces itself so you don't fall behind on cards. Competitive non-Commander formats have better purpose-built options — Spellskite, Teferi's Time Twist, Slip Out the Back — and Explosive Getaway is too underpowered to displace them in Modern or Pioneer. Standard is the exception worth watching: if the format is light on two-mana protective instants that draw, Explosive Getaway can see real play simply by filling a gap.
