Equipoise
Enchantment
At the beginning of your upkeep, for each land target player controls in excess of the number you control, choose a land that player controls, then the chosen permanents phase out. Repeat this process for artifacts and creatures. (While they're phased out, they're treated as though they don't exist. They phase in before that player untaps during their next untap step.)

Equipoise phases out opponents' excess permanents at the start of their upkeep — matching your count in each permanent type means they lose access to their board surplus without destroying anything, which makes it extremely hard to answer. It's a soft lock for white decks that deliberately run lean, and it's one of the most underplayed stax pieces in Commander.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Equipoise does its best work — multiplayer tables routinely feature asymmetric board states, and a player who runs fewer lands, creatures, and artifacts than their opponents gets a free tax every single turn. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but essentially unplayed; those formats move too fast and too linearly for a slow enchantment that needs a board to police. Oathbreaker is the closest analog to Commander in terms of relevance, where the same logic applies at a smaller table.

Price Context
Current price
$4.23 cheap tier
At $4.23, Equipoise sits at the cheap end of the market for a card with this much stax potential. It's an old, low-reprint enchantment with a narrow but devoted audience, so the price is unlikely to crater — if it ever sees a reprint, buy in.
