Enslave steals a creature and drains its controller for 1 life per upkeep — you get the body, they get the clock. Six mana is a real ask, but the effect is unconditional and permanent until the enchantment leaves.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Enslave does its best work: games go long, tables are full of threatening creatures worth stealing, and the life drain adds up over multiple upkeeps in a multiplayer context. Six mana puts it in the mid-to-late game slot, which is exactly when opposing commanders and bombs hit the board. In Legacy and Vintage, six mana is effectively unplayable — those formats end before Enslave resolves with any meaningful upside. Oathbreaker is a reasonable home for the same reasons as Commander, though the faster pace of 60-card oathbreaker games cuts into how many triggers you collect.

Current price
$0.08 bulk tier
At $0.08, Enslave is pure bulk — no financial reason to hesitate on picking up a copy. Bulk rares at this price point rarely climb without a reprint scare or sudden spike in competitive interest, neither of which is likely here.
