Elspeth, Sun's Champion card art
Elspeth, Sun's Champion lands on turn six and immediately puts three 1/1 soldiers into play, then threatens a board wipe that spares your tokens every subsequent turn — that combination of threat and removal on a single card is the whole argument for her. The Chain Veil and Commodore Guff-style planeswalker engines push her further by letting you lap through her loyalty abilities multiple times in a turn, but she earns her slot even without that scaffolding.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Commodore Guff

Commodore Guff

84.2% of decks · synergy 0.76

Commodore Guff is built around stacking loyalty counters on planeswalkers and drawing cards off them, and Elspeth, Sun's Champion is one of his most reliable payoffs — she produces a board to protect the superfriends pile while her minus clears out anything that threatens to break through.

02
Commander Mustard

Commander Mustard

63.7% of decks · synergy 0.57

Commander Mustard cares about Soldiers and rewards going wide with them, so Elspeth, Sun's Champion's plus ability generating three Soldier tokens every turn is exactly the fuel that engine wants.

03
Kasla, the Broken Halo

Kasla, the Broken Halo

58.5% of decks · synergy 0.50

Kasla, the Broken Halo uses angels and life-gain synergies in a midrange shell, and Elspeth, Sun's Champion fits as a top-end threat that stabilizes the board with tokens while the emblem closes games the deck can't win through combat alone.

04
Zinnia, Valley's Voice

Zinnia, Valley's Voice

50.0% of decks · synergy 0.42

Zinnia, Valley's Voice triggers off tokens entering the battlefield, so Elspeth, Sun's Champion pumping out three Soldiers every turn cycle generates a significant stream of those triggers.

05
Myrel, Shield of Argive

Myrel, Shield of Argive

50.4% of decks · synergy 0.40

Myrel, Shield of Argive locks opponents out of interacting on your turn and rewards high Soldier counts, making Elspeth, Sun's Champion a natural include — three Soldiers per turn cycle is real fuel, and the board-wipe mode preserves the entire team when Myrel's protection applies.

oathbreaker

Commander is where Elspeth, Sun's Champion does her best work — six mana is more manageable in a 40-life format with ramp everywhere, and her ability to both generate a board and wipe it selectively is exactly what midrange and superfriends decks need at the top of their curve. In Pioneer and Modern she's legal but rarely competitive; six mana is a steep ask in sixty-card formats where games end faster, and she doesn't close games quickly enough to justify that cost when cheaper planeswalkers do comparable work. Legacy and Vintage give her the same legal status but no meaningful play — the formats are too fast and too efficient. Oathbreaker is an interesting home where she can serve as the signature-spell shell's planeswalker, though she's more commonly seen as the commander herself rather than a support piece.
