Dwarven Driller card art
Dwarven Driller enters the battlefield and immediately destroys a land — no attack, no tap, no waiting — and that on-board impact is the whole pitch. The cost is real: five mana for a 2/2 is a bad rate, and the effect doesn't scale, so outside of dedicated land-destruction shells it rarely earns its slot. In Zo-Zu the Punisher builds, though, the math changes fast.

Zo-Zu the Punisher

Zo-Zu the Punisher taxes every land drop, so Dwarven Driller's enter-the-battlefield land destruction doesn't just slow an opponent — it converts directly into two damage dealt the moment that player tries to rebuild.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

FormatVerdict
commander

modern

oathbreaker

Dwarven Driller is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but Legacy and Vintage have no interest in a five-mana 2/2 with a one-shot land destruction trigger when efficient alternatives exist at half the cost or less. Commander is the only format where it sees real play, and even there the range is narrow: Zo-Zu the Punisher builds and dedicated land-destruction decks are essentially the entire audience. Outside those shells, Dwarven Driller is too slow and too fragile to justify the slot.

Price Context

Current price

$0.53 bulk tier

At $0.53, Dwarven Driller is firmly bulk — cheap enough that picking up a copy costs nothing, but niche enough that demand will never push it meaningfully higher. It's a low-risk include for the decks that want it.
