Dragon Scales gives a creature +1/+2 and vigilance — relevant stats for one mana — and then returns itself from the graveyard whenever you put a creature with power 6 or greater onto the battlefield. That recursion loop is the whole reason to run it: one mana buys an enchantment that keeps coming back for free.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Dragon Scales is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, and Oathbreaker, but realistically it belongs in Commander and Pauper. In Commander, the self-recursion trigger fires constantly in decks that regularly deploy large creatures — dragons, fatties, reanimator targets — making Dragon Scales a cheap, repeatable way to keep a key blocker ready or push through for combat damage. In Pauper it's a fringe option on defensive creatures, though the format moves too fast for a one-mana aura to matter much. Legacy and Vintage have no interest.

Price Context
Current price
$0.10 bulk tier
Dragon Scales is deep bulk at $0.10, and that price isn't going anywhere — it's a common with narrow appeal and no scarcity. Grab a copy for pennies if the recursion trigger fits your deck; there's no financial angle here either way.
