Dive Down

In Commander, Dive Down is a role-player in specific builds — most notably Orvar, the All-Form, where it doubles as a protection spell and a free copy trigger — but outside those synergy shells it's outclassed by counterspells that stop threats before they resolve. Pauper is the format where Dive Down earns real consideration on raw rate: one mana for hexproof and a toughness pump is legitimate tempo in a format where removal is efficient and creatures are small. In Pioneer, Modern, and Legacy, protection spells at this slot compete with Slip Out the Back and Spell Pierce, which answer more than just targeted removal, so Dive Down sits on the fringe. Standard legality gives it a window when the format's removal leans heavily on targeting, but it rotates in and out of relevance depending on the threat-answer balance of a given season.
