Desolation Angel hits the table and destroys every land in play — opponents' and yours — which is about as nuclear as a five-mana creature gets. The kicker cost adds your lands back to the casualty list, so unless you're building around that asymmetry, you need a plan to recover faster than the table does.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |

| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |

Commander is where Desolation Angel actually gets to do its job, because the format rewards setting up asymmetry — Avacyn, Angel of Hope in play, Eldrazi on the battlefield, or a Crucible of Worlds in hand all turn a mutual land wipe into a one-sided massacre. In Legacy and Vintage, a five-mana sorcery-speed threat that also kills your own lands is simply too slow and too painful for competitive play, where games end before turn five and land destruction of this scope isn't the angle you're pressing. Oathbreaker could theoretically support it in a dedicated land recursion shell, but the card pool is narrow enough that the setup is harder to assemble reliably.

Price Context
Current price
$1.85 cheap tier
At $1.85, Desolation Angel sits firmly in budget territory for a card with this kind of board impact. The price reflects its narrow build-around requirement — it's not a card you slot in anywhere, which caps demand and keeps the cost low.
