Desert Twister destroys any permanent — no type restriction, no targeting limitation — for six mana in green, which is the whole pitch and the whole problem. Six mana for a sorcery-speed removal spell is a steep ask when Reclamation Sage and Beast Within exist at a fraction of the cost.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Desert Twister is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but the only format where it sees any real discussion is Commander. In Legacy and Vintage, six-mana sorceries that only destroy one permanent are unplayable — those formats move too fast and have access to far more efficient answers. In Commander, the universal permanent destruction is genuinely valuable since green otherwise struggles with enchantment and planeswalker removal, but the cost keeps it fringe; most green decks can cover the same bases with cheaper modal spells and still have mana left over.
