Defensive Stance gives a creature +0/+3 and shroud until end of turn for one white mana — cheap protection that blanks targeted removal or combat tricks in a pinch. It's a narrow, single-use shield on an Aura that doesn't stick, which keeps it out of most serious lists.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Defensive Stance is too situational to earn a slot — one-shot shroud doesn't scale to a four-player table where threats are everywhere and card advantage is everything. Pauper is the format where Defensive Stance has the most plausible home, particularly in white weenie or aura-based builds that need cheap ways to push a creature through a block or dodge a removal spell. In Legacy and Vintage, the card is legal but utterly outclassed; those formats end games too fast for a reactive +0/+3 to matter. Oathbreaker shares Commander's card-efficiency demands, and the same logic applies: one-shot protection at instant speed isn't worth the slot.

Price Context
Current price
$0.04 bulk tier
At $0.04, Defensive Stance is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard, not the effect. There's no pressure on that price in either direction; it will stay a throw-in trade card indefinitely.
