Deep Freeze locks a creature out of the game permanently — no activated abilities, no attacking, no blocking, base 0/4 — for three mana at instant speed. It's clean, reliable removal that trades permanent exile for a body left on the board, and in most situations that trade is fine.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Deep Freeze punches above its price: instant speed at three mana handles commanders before they can activate, and the enchantment subtype matters in Aura-synergy builds. The body it leaves behind is occasionally relevant — opponents can still sacrifice the creature or blink it to reset — so decks with exile-based removal compete for the slot, but the low cost keeps Deep Freeze viable. In Pauper, it's one of the strongest common answers to problematic creatures at common rarity, seeing real play in blue control shells. Elsewhere — Legacy, Modern, Pioneer — blue has access to cheaper or cleaner answers, so Deep Freeze sits on the fringe unless a specific deck wants the enchantment type.

Price Context
Current price
$0.19 bulk tier
At $0.19, Deep Freeze is pure bulk — easy to pick up as a playset without a second thought. Bulk commons rarely move on price unless a format pushes them into high demand, so don't expect this to appreciate, but at this price floor there's nothing to lose running it.
