Death-Rattle Oni lands as a 5/4 trampler that can eat an opponent's creature on the way in — if you're running enough legendary creatures to fuel its ward and ward-adjacent upside, that's a real two-for-one threat. The cost is a five-mana body that does nothing if your legendary count is thin.

Commander is where Death-Rattle Oni actually belongs — legendary-tribal and Oni-typal decks can consistently trigger its enters-the-battlefield ability, and a 5/4 trampler with ward is a credible threat at a table. In Modern and Pioneer, five mana for a creature that requires a legendary setup to shine gets outclassed by faster threats and cleaner payoffs. Legacy and Vintage simply don't have space for a five-drop that needs scaffolding. Death-Rattle Oni is a Commander card through and through.

Price Context
Current price
$0.13 bulk tier
At $0.13, Death-Rattle Oni is deep bulk — easy to pick up as a throw-in or cheap single. That price is stable by definition; bulk rares don't move unless a deck archetype breaks out, and legendary-tribal isn't currently applying that kind of upward pressure.
