Dark Revenant card art
Dark Revenant replaces itself on top of your library when it dies, making it functionally unkillable as long as you keep drawing cards — the only real cost is that you have to cast it again each loop. Decks that want a recursive body or a persistent discard outlet will run it; everyone else will take Colossal Grave-Reaver or any other value creature that doesn't need two casts to do something.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

FormatVerdict
commander

oathbreaker

Commander is where Dark Revenant earns its keep — recursion matters more in a 40-life, multiplayer format where games go long and attrition is real. In Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer it's simply too slow and too low-impact to compete; the self-replacing ability doesn't translate to any competitive archetype in those formats. Oathbreaker has the same multiplayer dynamic as Commander, so the same recursive appeal applies at a smaller table.

Price Context

Current price

$0.07 bulk tier

At $0.07, Dark Revenant is deep bulk — you'll find it in a commons box before you'd bother ordering it. That price is stable in the way only forgotten uncommons can be: no spike is coming, but it also costs nothing to pick up a copy.
