Crystalline Giant

Artifact Creature — Giant

At the beginning of combat on your turn, choose a kind of counter at random that this creature doesn't have on it from among flying, first strike, deathtouch, hexproof, lifelink, menace, reach, trample, vigilance, and +1/+1. Put a counter of that kind on this creature.

Crystalline Giant card art
Crystalline Giant enters as a 3/3 and accumulates a new keyword counter every combat — flying, trample, lifelink, hexproof, indestructible, and more — turning into a one-card keyword soup that dominates the board if left alone for even two or three turns. The cost is the three-mana investment and the patience: opponents with instant-speed removal will often kill it before the counters stack, so it rewards decks that protect their threats or leverage the keywords immediately. Odric, Lunarch Marshal is the clearest home, since every keyword the Giant has earned broadcasts to your whole team at the start of combat.

Odric, Lunarch Marshal

Odric, Lunarch Marshal

50.3% of decks · synergy 0.49

Odric, Lunarch Marshal turns every keyword Crystalline Giant has accumulated into a team-wide buff at the start of combat, making even two or three counters on the Giant worth significantly more than their face value. In 50% of Odric decks, this Giant is the most efficient keyword-stacker in the list.

02
Me, the Immortal

Me, the Immortal

44.7% of decks · synergy 0.44

Me, the Immortal rewards permanents that accrue counters over time, and Crystalline Giant delivers a new keyword counter every single combat step — that's consistent, automatic progression that the deck wants. Nearly 45% of Me, the Immortal lists include it for exactly that reason.

03
Aegar, the Freezing Flame

Aegar, the Freezing Flame

29.7% of decks · synergy 0.29

Aegar, the Freezing Flame draws cards when Giants and Wizards deal excess damage, and a Crystalline Giant stacked with trample, double strike, or flying consistently deals that excess. It shows up in roughly 30% of Aegar lists as a reliable card-draw engine masquerading as a threat.

04
Illuna, Apex of Wishes

Illuna, Apex of Wishes

14.9% of decks · synergy 0.14

Illuna, Apex of Wishes mutates onto non-Human creatures, and Crystalline Giant is a legal mutation target that keeps accruing keyword counters through each combat — the keywords stay even after Illuna rides it. About 15% of Illuna decks use it as a sturdy, self-improving base creature.

05
Ruhan of the Fomori

Ruhan of the Fomori

13.2% of decks · synergy 0.13

Ruhan of the Fomori attacks randomly each turn, so the deck wants every attacker to be independently dangerous — Crystalline Giant earns keywords on its own without needing support, making it a natural fit alongside Ruhan. Around 13% of Ruhan lists include it as a threat that snowballs without any additional resources.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

FormatVerdict
commander
legacy
modern
pioneer
standard
vintage
pauper
oathbreaker

Commander is where Crystalline Giant does its best work: games go long enough for the keyword counters to stack, and keywords like hexproof and indestructible become genuinely hard to answer in a format with limited targeted removal per player. In Modern and Legacy it's too slow — three mana for a 3/3 that needs multiple combat steps to become threatening doesn't compete with the format's speed. Pioneer is theoretically legal but the same problem applies; the Giant needs time the format doesn't give it. Oathbreaker sits closer to Commander in pace, so keyword-stacking strategies can occasionally work there, especially with a signature spell that protects the board.

$0.39 bulk tier

At $0.39, Crystalline Giant is firmly bulk — no barrier to entry for any budget. Bulk rares at this power level rarely spike unless a new Commander printing creates a sudden demand spike, so expect it to stay in this range.
