Crypt Ripper enters as a 4/4 with menace when a creature died this turn, then shrinks to a 2/2 otherwise — payoff and floor are both tied to how consistently your deck generates creature deaths. In sacrifice-heavy Commander shells that need another menace threat on a budget, it earns its slot; everywhere else, the conditional size makes it a cut.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Crypt Ripper belongs specifically in sacrifice-themed decks that can almost guarantee a death trigger before casting it — Aristocrats builds running Dictate of Erebos or Grave Pact effects will reliably land the 4/4 body. In Pauper, the common slot is competitive and menace creatures are genuinely evaluated, but a conditional 4/4 for four mana faces stiff competition from creatures with unconditional stats. Legacy and Vintage are non-starters — Crypt Ripper's power level doesn't register in those formats. Pauper is the most realistic competitive home, and even there it's a fringe consideration.

Price Context
Current price
$0.10 bulk tier
At $0.10, Crypt Ripper is deep bulk — you're picking it out of a junk rare box, not buying it. That price reflects its limited demand accurately and is unlikely to move unless a sacrifice synergy in a future set changes the calculus.
