Crater Elemental taps to deal damage equal to its power to target creature, then resets its power to 4 — a repeatable removal spell stapled to a body that refuels itself every turn. The catch is summoning sickness and the tap requirement, which means you need a haste enabler or a patient gameplan to get real value out of it.

Crater Elemental sees essentially no competitive play in Legacy, Modern, or Pioneer — the rate is too slow and the body too fragile for non-rotating formats where efficient threats and answers both outclass it. Commander is the only realistic home, and even there Crater Elemental is a niche pick: it fits in elemental tribal shells, power-matters decks, and anything running Umezawa's Jitte-style counters manipulation, but it rarely makes the cut over simpler damage outlets. The repeatable damage trigger is genuinely interesting in Fury or Omnath builds where you can abuse the reset clause, but those decks usually have cleaner options.
